Beethoven
Our
2008 season provided a comprehensive look at the music of Ludwig
van Beethoven, including the 9th Symphony, the Emperor piano concerto,
all of the trios, six of his greatest piano sonatas, all of the
violin and cello sonatas, and related 20th century and contemporary
works.
We
featured many returning Bowdoin Festival faculty and guest artists
in our three concert series, including violinists
Lewis Kaplan, Joel Smirnoff, Joan Kwuon, Mikhail Kopelman, Sergiu
Schwartz, Ani Schnarch, Maria Schleuning, Dennis Kim, and Rene Jolles;
violists Michael Klotz and Rami Solomonow; cellists Steven Doane,
Rosemary
Elliott, Yehuda Hanani, and
Andre Emelianoff; woodwind artists Igor Begelman (clarinet), Eric
Ruske (horn), Katherine Needleman (oboe), and bassoonists Ben Kamins
and Larisa Gelman; pianists Emma Tahmiziàn, Peter Basquin,
Julian Martin, Olivier Gardon,
Constance
Moore, and Alberto Nosé;
guitarist Ricardo Iznaola; double bassist Kurt Muroki; and harpist
June Han.
New
performers for the 2oo8 season included the Juilliard String Quartet;
the Shanghai Quartet, the Amernet String Quartet; cellist Amir Eldan;
pianist Edward Auer; violinists Cyrus Forough, Krzysztof Wegrzyn,
Stephan Hempel, and Maria Alanen; and flutist Christina Smith.
