Salary

Job Summary

This is a live-in position. The Director of Residence Life and Activities (DRLA) will be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the six-week duration of the festival. The DRLA will resolve student housing assignment problems; supervise the residential life staff and enforce alcohol, noise, party, curfew and emergency procedure policies; intervene when necessary with student life problems; communicate with students' parents as needed; coordinate extracurricular activities for students; assign tasks to scholarship students and oversee the completion of tasks; and communicate regularly with the Executive Director, Director of Admissions, Bowdoin Security, and the Office of Summer Programs.

Education/Skills

College education preferred. Must have strong people skills, organizational skills, and problem solving skills. Typing and computer skills preferable. Must be proficient in English. A background in music is preferred.

Experience

Must be 21 years of age. Must have at least 1 year's experience supervising students and dealing with residential life issues. Experience supervising residential life staff is strongly preferred.

Contacts

Extensive contact with students ranging in age from 12 to 40 from many different cultures. Significant contact with festival faculty, parents of students, and with representatives of Bowdoin College and other summer programs.

Physical Requirements

Position requires sitting for part of the workday. Must be able to move up and down stairs and about campus quickly and easily. Must have a valid US driver's license, a good driving record, and be able to drive a 10-passenger van.

Working Conditions

The DRLA must hold office hours each day, Monday through Friday during the festival. Must attend concerts and be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the duration of the festival. Must participate in weekend trips. Must be prepared to deal with emergency situations at all times including evenings and weekends. Will be required to conduct "spot checks" of dorms, houses, and apartment complexes.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervise 3-4 Head RA's and 15 or more student RA's, including holding weekly staff meetings, acting as a resource to resident assistants who may have to deal with difficult situations, and intervening as necessary.
