"I want to tell you all what a joy it is

to be part of this great festival."

Joseph Robinson, former Principal Oboe, New York Philharmonic

[img] Lewis KaplanThe Bowdoin Festival's faculty is composed of renowned teaching musicians, performers, and soloists from around the world. Major conservatories such as Juilliard , Eastman, and the Royal College of Music; major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland and Philadelphia; and important chamber groups like the Ying Quartet and the Aeolian Chamber Players are represented on the faculty.

Aeolian Chamber Players, resident ensemble: Formed in 1961 by Lewis Kaplan to perform repertoire for strings, winds, and piano, the Aeolian Chamber Players has been the resident ensemble at Bowdoin since 1964. [img] TrioThe Aeolians, recognized for their commitment to both traditional and contemporary repertoire, have toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, including an acclaimed four-concert series of 20th-century American music at the Salzburg Festival in August of 1992. The ensemble has commissioned and performed works by many of the world's leading composers such as Milton Babbitt, Luciano Berio, William Bolcom, Chou Wen-chung, George Crumb, Mario Davidovsky, Carman Moore, George Rochberg, Elliott Schwartz, Ralph Shapey, and Chinary Ung. The Aeolians' recording of George Crumb's Night of the Four Moons for Columbia Records was nominated for a Grammy award.

Quartets in Residence: The Juilliard, Shanghai, and Amernet string quartets will be in residence at the Bowdoin Festival in 2008. Among other works, each will play a Beethoven string quartet in the Upbeat! or MusicFest concert series. Members of the quartets will also give masterclasses and coach chamber groups.
