About the Notes
In keeping with the Festival’s educational mission, this year’s program notes are written by Durrell Bowman, a summer intern funded  through a collaboration between the American Musicological Society (AMS) and the Bowdoin International Music Festival. The notes for our three artists’ series – Festival Fridays, Wednesday Upbeat! and Monday Sonatas – have been posted on the AMS website, to which you can link from this page. A directory of all of the notes may be found here.

Abbreviated program notes will be distributed at each concert. The online notes contain image- and text-based links to further information, time lines, works lists, and recordings (many of which are free).

Durrell has a  Ph.D. in musicology (UCLA, 2003) and is a student in a post-degree certificate program in Computer Applications Development (Conestoga College, 2009-10). He has written program notes for several institutions, including the Elora Festival, contributed many articles to music encyclopedias, including the New Grove Dictionary of American Music, presented a wide range of academic conference papers, and published a number of scholarly journal articles and book chapters.

In addition to writing the Festival’s program notes, Bowman’s summer work in Brunswick includes working at the office of the American Musicological Society.
