Hailing from Aurora Illinois, Mexican-American bassoonist Abigail Lopez currently serves as Assistant Principal in the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. She is currently completing her master’s at the Yale School of Music, where she studies with Frank Morelli. And earned her bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studying under Drew Pattison.
Abigail has performed with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and Toledo Symphony Orchestra. She has participated in renowned summer festivals including the Tanglewood Music Center and the Music Academy of the West. Internationally, she appeared in the Shostakovich Festival in Leipzig, Germany, performing alongside musicians from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhausorchester. Additionally, she has performed at the Bang on a Can Long Play Festival with the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble.
As a soloist, Abigail has received top prizes in the IDRS Norma Hooks Young Artist Competition and the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition.
A proud alumna of the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative (CMPI), Abigail is dedicated to expanding access and representation within classical music. Drawing from her own experiences as a first generation student, she is passionate about supporting young artists through mentorship, education, and increased access to musical resources and opportunities. She currently serves as a mentor within CMPI, guiding students through the college preparation process and helping to foster a more inclusive and equitable musical community.
