Tong Chen began his violin studies at the age of four. From 2007 to 2016, Chen attended Music Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Qing Zheng and Shisheng Zheng. In September 2016, he began studying with Miriam Fried at the New England Conservatory of Music.

Chen has performed in masterclasses with Pierre Amoyal, Midori, Cho-liang Lin, Andres Cardenes, Kun Hu, Nam Yun Kim, Hyo Kang, and Adam Kostecki. He has performed at many international competitions, such as the 2013 Hong Kong International Violin Competition and The 1st Schoenfeld String Competition. Chen has also participated in numerous music festivals, including the Verbier Music Festival, Festival de Granada, and Ehingen Music Festival. As a chamber musician, Chen has performed in many famous concert halls, such as Shanghai Symphony Hall, Helvting Concert Hall, and Jordan Hall in Boston.
